Gen 12:1 "Now the LORD had said unto Abram, you get out of your country, and from your kindred, and from your father's house, unto a land that I will show you:"
Avram, means exalted or high father. It is very interesting that Avram is a type and picture of G-d. Just as Avram had no children, our Father in Heaven had no children, yet he was called "father". The "sons of G-d" mentioned in Job, were angelic hosts and not "children" of G-d.
In the end he was re-named, Avraham, or father of nations. G-d also has become the father of nations through Yeshua His Son.
Vieyomer YHVH el-Avram, "And YHVH said to Avram". The most frequently used words in the Torah are "And YHVH said". The roots and heritage of our faith are grounded in hearing from G-d. Even those who cannot hear from Him have these words printed in the Bible, which read. Lekh lekha, "pick your self up and go" from the land of your kinsmen. These are stronger words than are indicated by translation without embellishment. The indication is that a clean break with the past is required. A new direction is given and history is being made. The Hebrew letters used here are of great value. Lamed means to learn or study. Notice how the lamed reaches high above the other letters. Lamed is also the first letter of Lav, or heart, the seat of passion. Chof sofit (final form of chof) reaches far below the other letters. This gives a feeling of completeness. Avraham was told to change everything, to learn new ways and change his heart as well as depart from here.
There is a relationship between following G-d into a situation unknown and the spiritual aspect of leaving darkness and entering light. Job 38:19,20 "Where is the way where light dwells? and as for darkness, where is its place, That you should take it to its bounds, and that you should know the paths to its house?" Job is being instructed/rebuked by G-d. This comment about the way where light dwells is very interesting. Few have truly known the depths and "bounds" of darkness. Hitler participated in the most heinous of evil deeds, yet he did not know its bounds, otherwise he would not (could not) have committed such atrocities. Yet mankind does participate in evil. Some to a greater degree than others. The fact remains that even though we are to leave the darkness, we are expected to know its bounds. How do you do that without participating in the evil of darkness?
Isa 45:7 "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things." If G-d created the darkness and formed the light, then the darkness in and of itself cannot be evil. It is the deeds that are performed in darkness that are evil. One can enter the darkness and refrain from evil.
Dan 2:22 "He reveals the deep and secret things: He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him." Here Daniel is saying that all knowledge is contained with G-d. If we truly want light, we cannot receive it by practicing those things which are reserved for darkness. We must do more than receive light. We must ENTER it.
Zec 14:6 "And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:" Today, men are confused. According to most men there is no light or dark. Only varying shades of gray. The Word of G-d is true. There is truly light and darkness. Enter the light and know the darkness.
Yeshua came for this purpose. Luke 1:79 "To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace."
John 3:18-21 "He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that does truthfully comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God." When we enter the light of G-d, our exposed deeds have to change for the good because it is embarrassing to have G-d or anyone else see our evil hearts and deeds. John 8:12 "Then said Yeshua again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
John 12:35,36 "Then Yeshua said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walks in darkness knows not where he goes. While you have light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light." It seems that those who walk in light have a limited time to work. Gen 1:3-5 "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day." The Sun, Moon and stars were not yet created. G-d separated the light from the darkness before physical light existed. John 12:46,47 "I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believes on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world."
1 Pet 2:9 "But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:" Notice that it doesn’t say anything about knowing darkness, just out of darkness. 2 Pet 1:19 "We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto you do well that you take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:" Let the "day star" arise in your hearts.
1 John 1:5-7 "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Yeshua the Messiah his Son cleanses us from all sin."
Lekh Lekha, Just like Avraham, we must get ourselves up and leave our natural place of residence (darkness) and walk with G-d into the promised land (light).
